J. Helen Elza is an American bestselling author, speaker, poet, and human rights activist, celebrated for her heartfelt women's fiction, particularly The Appalachian Trilogy.
Raised as the second oldest in a lively household of ten siblings in Hurst, Texas (a Dallas suburb), Elza found solace and adventure in books from an early age. Though her early life pointed toward traditional domestic roles — managing a daycare, taking in laundry, or working as a cook or housekeeper — her path took unexpected turns. At nineteen, she became the first female process server in five southern Los Angeles counties. Later roles included assembly line technician, legal administrative assistant, and long-haul truck driver, crisscrossing the U.S. and Canada in a Freightliner Classic XL.
Throughout these years, writing called to her persistently. Early school stories and high school newspaper pieces drew praise and laughter; college essays at UT Austin impressed English professors. But it was a chance encounter in 1972 — with a stranger under the most unlikely circumstances — that finally ignited her dream of becoming a novelist.

On loss, love, and a joyful return to the page
In late November 2014, as I eagerly planned my wedding and sketched out a fresh writing schedule, a phone call from a Nashville hospital changed everything. "We just delivered a newborn," the voice said. "You have 72 hours to pick him up, or we'll turn him over to the state."
At sixty-six, I left behind the title of fiancée — and my carefully planned writing routine. I drove toward Nashville alone, realizing halfway there that I had no car seat, no bottles, no diapers. Nothing for a newborn. As a widow with no nearby family, I would be raising this child entirely on my own.
Back in my rural East Tennessee home — an hour from the nearest city, on six-and-a-half acres with a one-acre pond that demands constant care — I juggled full-time work, two dogs, one cat, two ducks, one mischievous raccoon, and an endless parade of wildlife visitors. The writing schedule didn't just change; it vanished.
Raising a newborn to age ten brought relentless, unpredictable challenges: sudden illnesses, school runs, gardening in the rain, pond maintenance through every season, and the quiet strength required to do it all solo.
Now, with my son growing into a young man, I joyfully return to full-time writing. Finding Family — the third and final installment of The Appalachian Trilogy — has a fresh cover and a name that truly captures its heart. Miracle is relaunching for readers eight and older. More changes, new stories, and audio books are on the way.
